It was a fine day for the company to held a BBQ lunch, especially as an occassion to get closer interaction with clients, pre-christmas celebration, and making good use of such a beautiful friday to get lazy. A plate of salad, a bun + butter, filled with grilled chicken, sausages and beef was I all I need to keep my stomach happy. Oh yeah, and a couple of beers and red wine too!
Being a new guy that started working in the engineering world with my current company for about 7 months now, it’s always nice to have such occassion where you get the chance to meet other people from other companies and different fields. Listening and asking questions are where most of the talking are done. You never really know what interesting things what others might be doing!
I met piping and structural engineers, where they think that having design a visually good and functioning plant or building means a lot to them. How materials, equipments and all other related details are collected and presented. How things were built in the 70s-90s and how things has change now, in terms of cos tsaving and efficiency thanks to technology and software management tools. They are all just nice to know and learn about.
A system engineer says he can set restrictions based on active directory to what the person can or cannot do with his computer that’s connected to the network. So make sure you treat him nice, coz he might shut down your computer from the other side if he’s evil!
A software engineer/developer/programmer said that talking to yourself out loud while you are thinking of the logic or fixing a bug in your program actually helps. I think I have to agree with him!
The business managers were presenting prizes and making sure that people were having a nice time.
The skillset of an engineer is as good as his reputation
It was a good one with people with good mix of skills. Wonder what you will get if you attended a investing/finance/healthcare related lunch or seminar? It won’t be the same. It’s just a fact that people in different industries speaks different languages, and that’s what makes life so interesting. You should know the key players in your own field, as well as those from others.
