1. Control Calorie intake
2. Decide which food you can live without. Food and drinks such as soda pops, candy, salads dressing, fast foods and pizza should could be easily excluded from your daily diet. Plan your meals.
3. Commit yourself to do exercise and introduce resistance training (weight training) to your program. Developed muscles will help burn more calories even you’re just sitting still because muscle requires a lot of calories to maintain. If you are overweight or concerned about hurting your joints, start with swimming, cycling or walking before gradually increasing the intensity to activities such as aerobics, weight lifting and running.
4. Drink plenty of water, include more fiber in your diet and rest properly when it’s time to rest.
5. Set a realistic goal, mantain self discipline and self motivation. Recommit yourself when you find yourself swaying away from your goal or just procrastinating about why things haven’t work out yet. If you start seeing results, don’t just stop there until you reached your goals and make a new one if your goal has been achieved.

It really depends on your situation. If you are overweight, then building muscle while simultaneously doing cardio etc. is a lot of help. However, if you already have a slim figure then more muscle will only increase your weight.
