I’m a big believer of reading to improve ourselves. We all know that we can only know a fraction of what we need and want to know in our lifetime, but it’s still sad that some people are simply too lazy and ignorant to read.
Why do we read
1. To improve our skills. My interest is in developing a business around websites and software and making money out of them. PHP, Mysql, VB.NET, C#, Javascript, CSS and XHTML are all under my belt. Managing your finance, networking, marketing and business ideas are among my favorites as well. Whatever your skills are, I’m not surprised to hear people tell me that they’ve actually pick up their skills from reading and practising.
2. To know about something useful. Some people read for entertainment, and I think that’s basically a waste of time if you overdo it. If you want entertainment, there’s always video games, TV and movies. I read simply because I want to achieve something that I don’t know how to yet. From reading, I get to know some tips, tools to use and most important tap into the authors mental thoughts so I can refer to what and how other successful people think and manage their resources.
3. To take action and application. I read to know and then take action. Some people spent there whole lifetime reading, reading and reading. In the end, without taking any action at all, they accomplish nothing. That’s why there are so many books on self help, secrets to achieving happiness, fitness, financial success etc etc. But guess what, some people never apply what they’ve read. In my terms, that’s like reading purely for entertainment. Learning and knowing and not applying is like not knowing at all.
4. Source of motivation. A good book should serves as a good soure of motivation to encourage you to take action in achieving your goals.
5. Moving forward. It’s a human emotion as well as a human need to feel that we are important, needed and improving our lives each day. In order to move forward, we can start reading, change and improve the way that we think.
As a conclusion, reading is a stepping stone to open up your views and thoughts. If you are serious about what you have read, you should always take action and practise it. As always, practise makes perfection.
