First the setup. I have a local machine which is Windows XP and a VM which is running Windows Server 2003 R2. In the VM settings, I shared a folder to access some executable setup files that I have on my local machine’s C:\ so I can run them directly in the VM (saving the hassle of having to copy them into the VM).
After browsing to the shared folder in Windows 2003 Server VM and clicking on the executable, An errored message was returned quoting “windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file” evem though accessing other files such as documents and picture files were working fine.
The problem was this: Windows Server 2003 has something known as the “IE Enhanced Security” installed by default and as a result, I can’t run an executable via a UNC (which the shared folder is).
The only way I got this working was to unininstall the “IE Enhanced Security” through control panel > add/remove programs > windows components.
